This self-paced, online medical interpreter course is for aspiring medical interpreters who are looking for a 40-hour comprehensive training program that will prepare them to work as professional interpreters in medical and healthcare settings.
In this online course, students will learn the standards of practice and code of ethics from both the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). This 40-hour professional medical interpreter course online will prepare you to become a Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI). Students who enroll in The Professional Medical Interpreter will also be given access to the Academy’s medical oral language proficiency tests. Students must take the language proficiency tests for English and for their target language(s) if the Academy offers testing for their particular non-English language. This course is the first step in the medical interpreting certification process with the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI).
Multilinguals will learn the specialized skills they need to meet the demands of professional interpreting in today’s world. After taking the Professional Medical Interpreter course, you’ll earn the title of Qualified Medical Interpreter (QMI). You’ll be qualified to work as a QMI for hospitals, medical offices, rehabilitation centers, and other healthcare settings.

Below is a list of third-party language proficiency exam results that we will accept if you do not plan to take the Academy of Interpretation's proficiency tests OR if we do not offer testing for your language.
Once you are enrolled you will have two weeks access to complete the English and Target Language Proficiency Tests.
Access to the course won’t be granted. Second attempts and partial refunds would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Education department.
We only mail physical copies of the completed ProfessionalMedical Interpreter course. We do not mail Language Proficiency Certificates tostudents. Only digital copies are provided. Our team mails PMI certificates tothe provided mailing address within 14-days. We do NOT mail physical certificatesoutside the continental United States.
Course tuition is refundable for up to 14 days of enrollment, or before passing the final exam, whichever comes first. If you complete the MLPTs, the cost of processing and grading is deducted from your refund (up to $150)
Once you complete and pass the Medical Language Proficiency Tests, you will be given access to start the course.
No, you cannot start the PMI course before completing and passing the Medical Language Proficiency Test in English and your Target Language with a minimum score of 80% or more in the IRL scale, corresponding to professional working proficiency.

For the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) test, you get two attempts.
You have 45 days to complete the course. If you do not complete the course within the allotted time, you may receive a one-time, 30-day extension at no cost.
This course comes with access to our Medical Language Proficiency Test (MLPT). This includes an English test and your Target Language. For additional languages, the cost is $75 per test.
Yes, it costs $25 for your first extension. Requests for additional extensions will be judged on a case-by-case basis and payment of a minimum of $50 will be required.
You need to pass with a minimum score of 80% on both the Medical Terminology section and the Interpreter Skills section.
